Coral Rehab Underway Off Key West

KEY WEST (CBSMiami/FKNB) – Scientists and volunteers planted 200 live coral fragments Monday in the waters off Key West’s Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, launching an effort to restore depleted reef tracts and create an educational public snorkel park. Scientists at Mote Marine Tropical Research Laboratory on Summerland Key “outplanted” corals in 10 to 15 feet of water about 20 feet beyond a breakwater off Fort Taylor’s beach. Striving to restore large areas of major reef-building corals, Mote is employing a revolutionary “re-skinning” technique that enables fragments of brain, star and boulder corals to fuse together rapidly to form new coral heads. “We start the corals at a very small size, but that stimulates them to grow to about the size of a golf ball in about just three or four months,” said Dr. Dave Vaughan, manager of Mote’s reef restoration program. “We then take those and we plant them as singles and in groups of five,” he said. “The array of five, in just one or two years, should grow together and form a coral head about the size of a dinner plate or a frisbee. “That would have taken 15 to 25 or more years in the wild,” Vaughan said. The project, whose goals include creating a publicly accessible coral restoration area and snorkel park, is a collaborative effort between Mote Marine Laboratory, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the Florida Keys tourism council and Florida State Parks. Project organizers are seeking recreational snorkelers and “volun-tourists” to assist with upcoming planting sessions. Vaughn said he hopes to have more than 5,000 corals planted by the end of July. The Florida Keys News Bureau contributed to this report. Read more information at http://miami.cbslocal.com/2016/06/14/coral-rehab-underway-off-key-west/

Presentation Award Ceremony for Yacht Races Key West

January 12, 2016 Beep Beep Zip TANG! 10:24:02.  That is the monohull race record for the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race, hosted by Lauderdale Yacht Club and Storm Trysail Club, and managed by SORC.  Given NOAA’s forecast for stout northeasterlies for Wednesday afternoon’s race start, a number of boats may be taking aim at the record set in 2005 by Joe Dockery’s R/P 81 Carrera.  It is safe to say that those challengers will differ from Carrera in a couple of very important ways other than design and size; they will probably finish the race with their rudders in place and they will be sailing the race without the leadership of the amazing Ken Read. The first-ever academy sponsored by the Key West Fire Department

Twenty-one cadets  graduated the Firefighter II Academy, the first-ever academy sponsored by the Key West Fire Department. The ceremony was held at the Central Fire Station on North Roosevelt Blvd. "This day has been long in coming," Fire Chief David Fraga told the cadets and the large gathering of family, dignitaries and well-wishers. "From the first Richard and Nina Jo Wardlow Memorial Firefighter Scholarship to the present, it has been a combination of focus, determination and personal resolution. "This ceremony acknowledges the efforts of 21 students who made the sacrifice and who were committed to stay the course on their journey to become firefighters," he said. The Department sponsored the training in order to provide the necessary training for emergency medical technicians from CARE Ambulance to apply for positions as the City transitions from an outside provider to a complete in-house fire, rescue and ambulance service. With this certification, they will be able to take the state certification tests and apply for a position with the Key West Fire Department. "Looking back, we can say that 2014 has been a very good year," said Chief Fraga." "Not only for these students, but for the Key West Fire Department as well. We have commissioned and placed a new fireboat into service; we are in the process of moving into a new, state of the art fire station; we are well into the transition to take over the city 911 EMS ambulance service on April 1st; and we stand ready to hire 15 new firefighters by the first week in March." He acknowledged that the effort to complete this training is not just the effort of the cadets, but the members of the Department who served as instructors, [...]

Local artist Ray Rolston presents a canvas print to Hunter Hovan Quidor, representing the NJROTC

Local artist Ray Rolston repaid Key West High school students’ volunteer work in a unique way — with art. Students from the Key West High School Police Explorers and NJROTC assisted the Key West artist with set up and tear down at the ART! Key West Black Friday Art Sale. Rolston did not want the hard work to go unrewarded. “I tried to tip them and they told me because they were there as volunteers representing these fine programs they could not accept,” said Rolston. “I know from talking to them these clubs are very important to them and help them stay a part of the community so I asked if they could accept donations to theirclubs for fundraising and Officer Deglys Chavarria said that was allowed. I felt that these students exemplify what is great about living in the Keys and I wanted them to know their hard work was appreciated.” Article published in THE KEY WEST CITIZEN ◆ SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2014
